Gratitude to 2014, it was a lovely year of Gluten-Free-option discoveries here in Vancouver. We went on a quest for Gluten Free foods brought to us by people doing business in a reputable manner with respect for the land, people, and sustainability. We found many great people doing lovely acts in our communities, we were awed, inspired and grateful…hope flickers eternally for a better world.

Waste was also noticed – on a drive to Victoria I saw a field of pumpkins rotting and wondered about how many ways it could’ve been used and how many mouths it could’ve fed.

We enjoyed gluten free Italian foods like risotto, steak and salads, fish and seafood dishes, and of course pannecotta at La Pentola.

One of our nicest visits was at Tractor’s sampling  gourmet fast food made with the wow factor of Chef Ryan Mah.

We discovered spices and spice blends, visited Vancouver’s farmers markets and Taste of Yaletown, gained remarkable insight into the food we eat and the people behind them.

Another favourite was chatting with Celebrity Chef Trevor Bird and learning about Farm to Table cuisine. Fable Kitchen serves lunches too, it’s the place to make your lunch meetings happen for a few reasons; best burger in town, away from the prying eyes of downtown, and you get to impress your guests.

Pub food gone gluten free gourmet was a pleasant surprise because for far too long we avoided pubs and sports bars and missed out on all the fun we used to have with our friends, now with more pubs going Gastro with many gluten free options we can go out to “watch the game” on game nights.

We learned about the importance of juicing and juices on the go, and sampled an array of goodness from Rain or Shine’s yummy ice cream bar. Encountered more beers and ciders on the shelves than one can possibly imagine and had a wonderful chat with the guys from untapped, fell in love with a beer from Glutenberg. Learnt about Super-foods and fermented foods, organics (the good and the bad), gluten free snacks, business ethics…the list goes on.

Toured West Broadway with the Consul General of Greece and became forever enamoured with Greek culture, specifically the many foods that are inherently gluten free, made naturally without additives, preservatives and enhancers.

Afternoon teas brought to us by Neverland – never thought afternoon tea could be a reality again…maybe it’s a dream…

Ayurvedic laws how it should be applied to the foods we eat; chakras, colours, flavours. Peace.

Life got easier by using GEO’s delivery service online – organic grocery shop without leaving home saves time and money but best of all it helps you create meals without too much thinking.

Glorious Gluten Free baked goods in East Van at Float On Bakery, that woman can bake!

Met and chatted with Jordan of Lloyd James , he is a meticulous researcher, a fount of information on what’s happening in our food industry today , he is fuelled by respect for health and wellness and that is reflected in true belief in his brands. Boy are they ever good!

Toured the cleanest commercial kitchen in Vancouver and was quite impressed with Salam Bombay’s food.

Learned about coconuts and the many uses of Coconut oil and flour – cooking with coconut flour is an art form of its own. Did you know one tablespoon of coconut flour requires 2 eggs and 1 cup of milk? Coconut flour is the most moisture hungry ingredient I have ever used but it does make some delicious goodies like sponge cakes and omelettes.

Guyanese and Caribbean cuisines, that spoke to my heart partly because it is my roots but mostly because of the boldness of the concept and the guys respect for all peoples.

2014 is a piece of our past to be thankful for – we grew as we should, we learnt new knowledge and skills, we met inspiring people, we lived it with compassion (not pity), we clambered the rocks and mountains in our paths, stood tall at the top and strolled down on the other side in triumph… now we leave 2014 behind with many thanks for the lessons learnt and insights gained…
